The 2nd Technical Workshop on “EPS and XPS Process Improvement” within the scope of the Project Enhancing Environmental Performance in the Expanded and Extruded Polystyrene Foam Industries in Turkey (HBCD Project) was held on 07 February 2024.

Representatives from the relevant institutions, organizations, and the sector attended the 2nd Technical Workshop, which was held at Renaissance Istanbul Polat Bosphorus Hotel on February 7, 2024, in cooperation with our Ministry, İZODER, and EPSDER.

Head of the Chemicals Management Department, Mr. Nihat Yaman, in his speech at the opening of the workshop, touched upon the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors in solving environmental problems. He stated that the HBCD Project, executed by the Directorate General of Environmental Management, financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and implemented by the United Nations Development and Industrial Organization (UNIDO), is crucial in terms of transferring information and bringing together relevant institutions.

At the workshop attended by officials from public institutions and the private sector, speakers who are experts in their fields informed the participants with their presentations. The technical workshop consisted of five sessions. In its opening session, Pınar Saylam from the Department of Chemicals Management on “Provisions and Obligations within the Scope of the Stockholm Convention”; In the first and second sessions titled “XPS Production Processes, Process Problems”, Rüstem Polat; In the third session titled “EPS Production Processes and Process Problems”, Prof. Dr. Nurseli Uyanık gave information to the participants on “Suspension Polymerization Fundamentals and Application to EPS Production”.

In the fourth session with the subject of “EPS Process Problems and Recycling”, Akif Ayaz discussed “Recycling in the EPS Foam Industry”, on the other hand, a presentation was made by Tigin Özyapıcı under the title of “EPS Process Problems”.

In the fifth session of the Workshop, the discussion topic was “Waste Management”. Edoardo Scaggiante on “Pentane Recovery Systems in the EPS Foam Industry”; under the title “Waste Management and HBCD Disposal in the EPS and XPS Foam Industry”, Dr. Fabio Falco and Ethem Uysal gave information to the participants.
