TRAINING ON DETERMINATION OF SOIL POLLUTION CAPACITY FOR ASSSESMENT

Training on Determination of Soil Pollution Capacity for Assessment was held on 17-18-21 December 2020 with the participation of approximately 100 people from central and Provincial Directorates of Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and the related public institutions and organizations under Identification and Remediation of Contaminated Sites with POPs Project.

Gürsel Erul, Directorate General of Environmental Management, Head of Department of Water and Soil Management, gave the opening speech and noted that capacity building activities on control of soil pollution and point source contaminated sites are initiated with this training within the framework of sustainable development goals. After Mr. Erul’s opening remarks, Meral Mungan Arda, UNDP Project Manager, gave a presentation on the project.

Following the presentation, Gülhan Saygılı, Head of Soil Pollution Control Unit from Water and Soil Management Department and Bursev Doğan Artukoğlu, Head of Priority Chemicals Management Unit from the Chemicals Management Department informed the participants about the management of control of soil pollution and point-source contaminated sites and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

On the first day of the training, Prof. Dr. İpek İmamoğlu, Contaminated Sites Consultant and Prof. Dr. Elçin Kentel Erdoğan, Risk Assessment Consultant shared the important issues within the scope of Regulation on Control of Soil Pollution and Sites Contaminated by Point-Sources and Regulation on POPs. On the second day, trainings were provided on contaminated sites, soil properties, contaminant categories, risk-based management of contaminated sites and sampling requirements.

On the last day of the training, Ivan Holoubek, International Technical Consultant talked about the EU acquis on contaminated sites and international best practices from EU on remediation of contaminated sites. In the last session, evaluation of components of contaminated site assessment were explained through a case study.

During the training, feedbacks were received through interactive online tools to learn the knowlege level of the participants before and after the training.

Training on Determination of Soil Pollution Capacity for Assessment ended with the evaluation of the training and receiving feedbacks from the participants for the next training period.
